The Nature Trails
April is a fantastic time for real exploration out on the hills. The new foliage has not yet taken hold and the trails are generally clear and visible. Plant and wildlife are emerging daily. The white storks have already returned as have numerous other migratory birds, plus there’s a good chance you’ll see hares, jackals, black storks and river herons.
The Horses
The horses are beginning to lose their winter coats and are feeling fresh with the arrival of new growth grass. They have already spent over one month coming back into work, so they’re settled in and building fitness daily.
Cultural Events
Orthodox Easter is usually sometime in April and remains pretty much the biggest celebration in the Bulgarian calendar. Easter is celebrated in Bulgaria with the painting and decorating of eggs, eating lamb and baking a special bread called Kozanak.
What to Bring
Nights can still be cold throughout April, so bring sweaters/jumpers and a warm jacket. There’s also a good chance of rain throughout the month too, so a comfortable riding jacket and/or cagoule is essential.
Our heavy clay soils get very sticky after rainfall, so wellies and or strong riding boots are also recommended.
