The Tundzha is Bulgaria’s second largest river after the Maritza. It begins in the Stara Planina mountains in central Bulgaria and flows through the towns of Sliven, Yambol, Elhovo to Srem and then onward to Turkey.

The river around Srem is prized for its sports fishing and natural beauty, and fishermen congregate in the area travelling regularly from as far afield as Plovdiv and Sofia. Species found around Srem include; catfish, pike, perch, chub, barbel, nase, mullet and asp.

For most species there’s an annual ban on fishing from February to May (although this might deviate slightly depending on the conditions), for spawning, however, from  around June each year- it’s open season!

The Tundzha around Srem offers hard and soft shore side spinning for catfish up to 40 pounds, pike up to 15 pounds, asp up to 10 pounds, chub up to 5 pounds.

Fishing licenses can be obtained from Topolovgrad Municipality offices for a small fee, (under 20 Leva).
